The so-called "Trajan Column" was erected in Rome in A.D. 113 to commemorate the victories of the Emperor Trajan. The letters 'TRAJAN' using Goudy Trajan Regular are superimposed in red to show how well it captures the essence of the original lettering. These "monumental capital" letterforms are considered the most elegant example of Roman capitals and serve as the standard and inspiration for all classic Roman capital letterforms, including drawings by the great American type designer Frederic W. Goudy, which in turn are the basis for the Goudy Trajan typefaces by CastleType.
